The Boreal
Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS) is a large-scale international
interdisciplinary experiment in the northern boreal forests of Canada. Its goal
is to improve our understanding of the boreal forests -- how they interact with
the atmosphere, how much CO2 they can store, and how climate change will affect
them. BOREAS wants to learn to use satellite data to monitor the forests, and
to improve computer simulation and weather models so scientists can anticipate
the effects of global change.
Canadian Climate Impacts and
Adaptation Research Network - Forest Sector Build a network of researchers

CIFOR - Center for International Forestry
Research (Bogor, Indonesia). CIFOR was established under the CGIAR system
in response to global concerns about the social, environmental and economic
consequences of loss and degradation of forests. CIFOR's Mission is to
contribute to the sustained well-being of people in developing countries,
particularly in the tropics, through collaborative strategic and applied
research and related activities in forest systems and forestry, and by
promoting the transfer of appropriate new technologies and the adoption of new
methods of social organization, for national development.
The Centre for Northern Forest Ecosystem
Research (CNFER) is a research unit of the
Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources, located at Lakehead
University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. CNFER has close links with both the
Faculty of Forestry
and Department of Biology at Lakehead University, and many CNFER scientists
have adjunct status at the University to supervise Graduate students. CNFER is
multi-disciplinary research unit, with a mandate to study the effects of
forestry practices on boreal aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
Current Results is British
Columbias natural resources research digest. This online newsletter
brings you convenient summaries of newly-published research findings. It covers
all aspects of BCs natural environment and forestry including ecology,
wildlife, silviculture, tree functioning, economics, hydrology, fisheries and
much more. Hundreds of science summaries are also available in a searchable
archive.
The Ecological Monitoring and Assessment
Network (EMAN) is a national network which brings often independent
environmental monitoring and research activities together in an ecological
framework to facilitate cooperation and a holistic approach to ecological
enquiry and ecosystem understanding. The network connects the Ecological
Science Cooperatives (ESCs) operating across the country. It is highly
decentralized and acts as a coordinating body, facilitating communications
among participants and providing strategic direction.
Environment and Sustainable Development
Research Centre at UNB serves as a link between the University and
government, industry, and the non-profit community on a wide range of issues

FPInnovations brings together FERIC,
Forintek, Paprican, and the Canadian Wood Fibre Centre of Natural Resources
Canada, to create the worlds largest private, not-for-profit forest
research institute. With over 600 employees spread across Canada, FPInnovations
unites the individual strengths of each of these internationally recognized
forest research and development institutes into a single, greater force.
- FERIC develops and helps implement innovative
and safe forest operational solutions covering the vast range of engineering,
human, operational and environmental aspects of forestry and wildland fire
operations.
- Forintek is Canada's national wood products
research institute. Our role is to support the forest products industry in
optimizing manufacturing processes, extracting higher value products from the
available resource and meeting customer's expectations of performance,
durability and affordability.

The International Model Forest Network has been
inspired by the success of the Canadian Model Forest Network, a program
announced in 1990 to enhance the sustainable management of Canadian forests. At
each site, local partnerships are created among groups representing industry,
environmentalists, community associations, indigenous peoples, and other
relevant interests, who work together to define and implement a shared vision
of sustainable forest management. Since 1992, this uniquely Canadian approach
to the development of responsible forestry practices has gained international
exceptance.
