International Forestry
Until recently, the CIDA Forestry Advisers Network (CFAN) maintained a website that featured the description of CIDA-supported forestry projects in developing countries and a series of papers on international forestry issues. Some of the more popular issues papers are reproduced below. Note to reader: To view these documents, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Deforestation - Tropical Forests in Decline - examines the extent of tropical deforestation in developing countries, its causes and consequences, and the prospects for more sustainable land use alternatives. The paper has been prepared as a contribution to the general public's better understanding of the complex social, economic, and environmental issues that surround tropical deforestation.
Forests, Trees, and the Millennium Development Goals - In September 2000 in New York, the Millennium Summit was held, bringing together at the UN General Assembly over 150 world leaders to reconfirm their commitment to sustainable development. At that time, the UN member states unanimously adopted the Millennium Declaration for achieving human development.
Tropical Forestry and the Environment - examines the major environmental problems facing tropical forests and looks at practical approaches to address them.
Tropical Forests and Climate Change - examines global climate change and its causes, describes climate changes impact on forests, summarizes the Kyoto Protocol as it relates to forests, summarizes forests role in mitigating climate change, and provides recommendations for international cooperation in the forest sector.
These papers were prepared by John Roper while under contract with the Policy Branch of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
Join the CIF!
As of Feb. 26, 2007 our membership has fallen to approximately 1,700 individuals - down by about 850 (600 less in Alberta alone). We need to work quickly to keep the Institute sustainable. Our ThinkChange Sessions have recently emphasized the importance of a strong, healthy and engaged membership, and the need to actively maintain and build ourselves at the grassroots level.
Our goal by AGM/Conference 2007 this August is to have at least 3,000 members. We can achieve this if we continue to be active at all levels - building immediate and direct value for our members, continuing to strive for positive change and rejuvenation, cultivating partnerships, and most importantly - by using the personal and direct approach in signing and recruiting new members. Through our Sections, we have initiated this same approach in an effort to re-sign members who have not renewed to date.
We ask that you please take some time to personally contact potential members - individuals who you think will become enthusiastic and engaged in the Institute, and sign them up (membership form attached). If every existing member is successful at convincing at least one new person of the value in joining, we will easily over-achieve on our 3,000 target by this August. We all must work together to rejuvenate and re-build the Institute in every respect, despite our often far too busy schedules.
Finally, the Institute will recognize and show appreciation to our Champions; while not an incentive program per se, we hope that everyone who works to find new members truly believes in what we do and what we stand for as a national voice and advocate for sound forest stewardship.
Sign up one member - You will receive a certificate of appreciation during a special "Champions" Reception hosted by the National Executive and Board of Directors at AGM Conference 2007 in Toronto this August
Sign up five members - You will have a choice of one special gift item from the new CIF/IFC Store
Sign up 10 or more members - You will be invited to a special Scotch Tasting with the National Executive during AGM Conference 2007 in Toronto this August
Thank you for your dedication to the Institute

Canadian Trees The First National Magazine about Canadian Trees and Forests
The Tree Canada Foundation and Pegasus Publications are proud to announce the arrival of Canadian Trees magazine, a vital and truly one-of-a-kind publication. This beautifully designed, full-colour magazine is the first and only national publication wholly dedicated to celebrating an integral part of Canadas prosperity and heritage - our trees and forests.
Canada is blessed with 10% of the worlds forests, 180 distinct tree species and over $43 billion generated from forest-related eco-tourism and wood products. But with 80% of Canadians living in cities and towns, the remarkable health and financial benefits of such an abundance of trees are not fully appreciated. Canadian Trees provides informative, engaging content that reminds citizens of our status as a leading "forest nation" by highlighting the places, people and issues that affect our greatest natural asset.
Launched in October of 2004, the inaugural issue generated immediate interest amongst industry professionals and everyday tree-lovers alike. From useful growing tips to articles on urban beautification, forest fires and profiles of industry leaders, it is the definitive magazine for people who are passionate about trees. "A symbiotic, passionate relationship exists between people and trees," says Dorothy Dobbie, President of Pegasus Publications Inc. and President of the advocacy group the Coalition to save the Elms. "This magazine gives expression to our fascination with trees, a topic whose time has come".
As the Editorial Advisor to the magazine, Canadian Trees directly compliments the Tree Canada Foundation's public awareness and educational goals. "Forests provide millions of dollars worth of environmental services", says Jeff Monty, President of the Tree Canada Foundation. "They are the ultimate clean air factory, performing the combined functions of air filter, sponge, humidifier, heat shield, wind block and carbon sink. We are proud to partner with Pegasus Publications and bring these amazing stories to Canadians everywhere".
The Tree Canada Foundation is a charitable organization that partners with local volunteers in communities across the country to improve quality of life by planting and caring for trees. Planting over 75 million trees in Canadian neighbourhoods, schoolyards, parks and countryside, the Foundation leaves a living, breathing legacy for generations to come.
Pegasus Publications is the Winnipeg-based publisher of a number of high quality magazines and periodicals. Their very popular regional publications Ontario Gardener, Manitoba Gardener and Alberta Gardener are loyally read by hundreds of thousands of gardening enthusiasts.
Canadian Trees is available at select newsstands across Canada or by subscription. To subscribe, call 1-888-680-2008 or email to subscribe@localgardener.net

CFPC launches Certification Resource Center
The Certified Forest Products Council (CFPC) is proud to announce the launch of its Certification Resource Center at www.certifiedwood.org. With its multiple search engines and educational tools, the CRC is the definitive on-line resource for sourcing Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified forest products, learning about forest certification, comparing certification systems, and much, much more.
One particularly powerful part of the Center is the 'FSC-Certified Products' finder that enables Internet users to search for any type of forest product in the FSC market by species, location and vendor. Other sections of the Center compare forest certification systems, present specific information about FSC certification, and offer guides for construction specification and procurement policies.
The Certification Resource Center is an unprecedented tool for architects and designers, buyers in government and industry, consumers, and others on the lookout for environmentally responsible wood products. We hope that you find the Certification Resource Center a valuable tool in your work and welcome your feedback about the site.
Yours sincerely,
Sue Hulme
