The Rainforest
Alliance (RA) is an international nonprofit organization that works to

land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York
City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest
Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them
transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.
SmartWood (SW) is a
program of the Rainforest Alliance created in 1989; it is the oldest global
forestry certification program and has been accredited by the internationally
recognized Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). SmartWood's mission is to promote
the implementation of sustainable forestry worldwide. To accomplish this,
SmartWood provides forest management and chain of custody certification
services.
Summary of
Consultancy: The Forest Management (FM) Consultant, Western
Canada, will provide FM and verification services and support market
development for SW FM certification services to clients in Western Canada. S/he
will assist the Regional Manager in managing all SW FM and verification clients
in the region through coordination of local SW representatives. The primary
focus will be on managing and developing the FM certification services in
Canada.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as Western Canada point
person for FM and verification issues related to Canada;
- Conduct FM certification and
verification assessments and audits as requested by Regional
Manager;
- Perform certification task
management functions for FM certification and verification work;
- Facilitate communication with
local representatives regarding FM assessment and audit status;
- As directed by the Regional
Manager, maintain, implement, and revise Certification Quality & Systems
documentation for all FM and verification work;
- Assist with the development of
materials and programs to train consultants to perform assessments and audits
as requested;
- Support the development and
launch of new products and services;
- Assist in field testing of new
products and further develop new FM products; and
- Other assignments as
needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree, in Forestry,
Natural Resource Management or related field; Master's Degree
preferred;
- Minimum 5-7 years work experience
in forestry, forest ecology or related field;
- Environmental management system
auditor training experience preferred;
- Knowledge of SW Certification
and/or FSC certification a plus;
- Strong organizational skills and
attention to detail;
- Excellent English verbal and
written communication skills; French language skills a plus;
- Strong customer service
skills;
- Strong presentation
skills;
- Strong computer skills (MS
office, database, and Internet);
- Ability to work independently and
as part of a team; and
- Willingness to travel 20% of
time.
